Our Aims

“Wilf’s Wood” is the working name of a wilding project set up in 2020. The aim is to create a natural community space just outside Evercreech in Somerset. We want to provide a biodiverse environment including wetlands and woodlands for carbon capture that is used regularly by as many people as possible within Evercreech and the local area.

The site is located within walking distance of the village centre along the edge of Leighton Lane that heads West out of the village. Work will be done to create a variety of habitats to encourage the natural processes to transform the field into a new environment for wildlife to thrive and for people to enjoy.

What we are doing

The field was released from traditional farming at the end of Summer 2020. Despite the constraints imposed by the Covid related restrictions. It is hoped that some of the major elements of the project will be put in place over the next few months. These include earthworks to create ponds and the planting of trees.

The project is just starting and we have some initial ideas about how to develop the site; but those will take five or ten years to realise. However we hope and expect that our plans will change as we see how the site is used. It needs to be a dynamic place that can respond to the needs of the local community and the environment.

How You Can Help

Contribute Ideas

A community project requires the active involvement of its community. We need you to share your vision of what this project could do that would be useful for you.

What would you like to see?

  • A great space for walking your dog or taking your children
  • A forest school
  • A community orchard
  • A hide for bird watching
  • Decking to enable pond dipping

Lend a hand

As the project develops, we expect that there will be major tasks that will require help from volunteers. In particular, we are going to plant several hundred trees on the site. If you can help with that or other tasks such as mowing or mulching then please get in touch.

Skills and Equipment

Some of the plans for the site require specialist skills and equipment. For example we will be building ponds near to the brook that runs along the edge of the site. The spoil will be used to create raised areas and different habitats. If you have access to a digger or dumper; and can offer them for use on this project then we would love to hear from you.
